19th Century Military History of the Elgin Area

Introduction

Elgin's involvement in the Black Hawk War is hard to define.   The two soldiers buried at Vasa park located between South Elgin and the Village of Coleman (now gone) fall within the area covered in this study.   Although marked as unknown soldiers now I've taken the liberty of including them in this work.
Almost all the Illinois soldiers in the Black Hawk War were members of Militia Companies formed for this war.   Until Gen. Scott was sent to Illinois there was not regular army control.
